Sunday Worship and Adult Forum – August 22, 2010
Join us for worship at 8:45 a.m. or 11 a.m. on Sunday, the Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost.
This Sunday’s adult forum, “Jesus as Seen from the Perspective of Theologies of Liberation,” will be led by Dr. Mary Solberg, Associate Professor of Religion at Gustavus Adolphus College. Liberation theologians begin by recognizing injustice in the world and committing themselves to transformation. They claim Jesus Christ as “Liberator,” engaged in both his own historical context and ours, leading, inspiring, and enabling those who have been marginalized to act “toward” the Reign of God: not just a new heaven, but also a new earth. What does “liberation” mean to liberation theologians and their communities of accountability, and what does it mean to us? How and whom does Jesus “liberate”? Do we need “saving” or do we need “liberating” or do we need either one? Dr. Solberg will bring some liberation theological voices along and help us reflect together about these questions. Join the conversation at 9:55 a.m. in the library.
